GENERAL TEXT (Along the LH Side):
Major league baseball has known many black ball players who have achieved levels of greatness and have been accorded the status of superstar. But from the Civil War on, with limited exception before the turn of the century, blacks played baseball on separate teams and in separate leagues. From the time the International League institutionalized racial exclusion in 1897, it would be fifty years before blacks would be allowed to play the major leagues. In late 1945,
Jackie Robinson
signed a contract with the
Brooklyn Dodger
organization. By 1947, when Robinson was playing with the parent club, the death knell of the Negro Leagues had long since sounded, and by 1950, they no longer existed. The history of major league baseball will remain forever marred by its early policy of segregation, but the stars of the Negro Leagues live on in legend.

THREE EXAMPLES OF THE TEXT BELOW THE PICTURE:
THE LELAND GIANTS
- The Leland Giants were Chicago's most successful black team around the turn of the century. This photograph, dated c.1907-1910, is notable because it includes Rube Foster (standing, far right) as a player, not a manager/owner. Foster was a legendary pitcher, admired by Honus Wagner and Christy Mathewson, and was said to have won fifty-one games in 1902. Foster, as the organizer of the first Negro baseball league in 1920, came to be called the "Father of Black Baseball."
JAMES THOMAS "COOL PAPA" BELL, (1903-1991)
- "Cool Papa" Bell was considered the fastest man to have ever played in the Negro Leagues. It is said that he could circle the bases in eleven seconds. While in his prime Bell was rumored to be the highest-paid player in black ball, said to have received a month. His career spanned at least twenty-five years from when he first broke in with the Stars as a nineteen-year-old in 1922 to his final season with the Homestead Grays in 1946. Despite a batting average of .429 in his final season (at age forty-three), Bell remained retired, refusing several offers from major league clubs (at least one as high as ,000). Cool Papa Bell was elected to the National Baseball Hall of fame in 1974.
THE HOMESTEAD GRAYS VS. THE ELITE GIANTS, 1944
- This picture was taken during a Negro National League game between the Washington Homestead Grays and the Baltimore Elite Giants at Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C. In a sequence not likely to occur often with two future Hall-of Fame players, the Giants' Robert Clarke and Felton Snow are chasing the legendary Buck Leonard back to third base, where Leonard's equally illustrious teammate, Josh Gibson, is already standing.
So, that's it.
