Jackie Robinson, a standout player for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues, signed to play with Brooklyn to became the first African-American player in the modern Major Leagues. He quickly became baseball's top drawing card and a symbol of hope to millions of Americans. With Robinson as the catalyst, the Dodgers won six pennants in his 10 seasons. He was named National League MVP in 1949 after leading the league in hitting (.342) and steals (37), while knocking in 124 runs. He closed out his MLB career in 1956 with a .311 batting average. Six years later, he became the first African-American player to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. On the 50th anniversary of his breaking the color barrier, all of Major League Baseball saluted Robinson by permanently retiring his number from the game.
