    Description

    On offer here is an
EARLY post US military segregation class photo
    of the
6th Infantry Battalion in June, 1951 at Camp Pendleton base in Oceanside, CA
    .
The 'yarder' framed photo measures 9 in x 30.5 in long.
    The US
    military
    began it process of
    desegregation
of the various branches of the
    military
in 1949 with 'unified' training at the various military bases across the country. The process took time and the early experiences of African American recruits made difficult by both the Marine leadership and the fellow recruits made
    appearances
by blacks uncommon by this date.
We do not yet know this recruits name, but will continue to research
    military
records to determine what his name was and what service and possible deployment record exists.
A scarce and important historical and cultural artifact.
