"Mighty long on looks" and "better than ever for you... New 1950 Mercury" – Mercury magazine advertisement.
"Why is Mercury popularity the highest in history? It's because Mercury-a great car last year-is better than ever in everything today! Better in styling-with new advanced design! Better in comfort-with 'Lounge-Rest' foam-rubber cushioned seating" Better in economy-with 'Econ-O-Miser' carburetion! Better in performance-with 'High-Power Compression!' Better to drive-easier to park. Yes, one look-one thrilling ride-and you'll agree, Mercury is a bigger value and better than ever! See your Mercury dealer-and drive the better than ever new Mercury today! It's 'America's No. 1 Economy Car'!"
It took the copywriters seven exclamation points to get across how exciting the 1950 Mercury model line was.
Offered here is a 1950 Mercury Deluxe Coupe, fully restored, tastefully refreshed, and professionally upgraded to a show-quality presentation with reliable, enhanced performance. Owing to their beautiful, flowing design and their exuberant post-war trim, Mercurys from the early Fifties have long been a popular choice for custom builds. Few have exceeded this black-on-black example for attractiveness or power integration. The car's odometer shows 48,634 miles, fewer than 1,000 miles per-year since new.
The exterior paint finish retains a mirror-like gloss and deep reflectivity across the car's expansive sheet-metal surfaces. (To best assess the quality of the paint and chrome finish, be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) The bodywork is free of damage, dents, or dings. (The car's lowered stance is the result of a 3-inch suspension drop.) Professionally applied gray and red (painted) pin-striping accents the many louvers added to the hood, the gas-filler doors, and includes a single paint stripe running the full length of the body. A hand-painted "Crazy 'Bout a Mercury" graphic-a nod to the popular song-is executed on rear-facing surface of the trunk lid. The effect is tasteful and fun while fully in keeping with hot-rodding as it was executed back in the day. All chrome-on both bumpers, front grille and headlight trim, body side trim, cabin glass trim, and taillight trim-has been triple-plated, and so is like-new, entirely free of patina. Cabin glass and all lighting lenses (including on the twin spotlights) are clear and uncracked. Taillights feature "blue dot" inserts, a popular modification in the Fifties; they result in a purple color when illuminated and were once considered something of an "outlaw" statement. Wide whitewall tires are mounted on factory steel wheels with period-popular faux-spinner chrome full-wheel covers.
Inside, the mix of customized touches and refreshed stock furnishings strikes a perfect balance in black and chrome. Door trim is a beautifully stylized mix of black-painted metal, pleated leather, chrome, and black carpet. Upholstery on the front fold-forward bench, and rear bench seats (with center armrests in both rows) is classic, vertically pleated black leather on upgraded seats. (In the day, mothers would caution their daughters about ever accepting a date's invitation to sit back there.) The stock steering wheel and chrome-rich dashboard make for a memorable sight. Below-dash modifications include the addition of engine-monitoring gauges, an AM-FM radio with cassette audio system, and a CB two-way radio. The shifter for the rebuilt T5 5-speed manual transmission is floor-mounted and topped with a skull-with-top-hat shift knob. The black-painted dash is beautifully pin-striped with more song lyrics from "Crazy 'bout a Mercury" in hand-executed pinstriping facing the front passenger.
Under the louvered hood, the flathead Mercury V8 (professionally built by Motor City Flatheads including a new 4-barrel carburetor and Edelbrock® aluminum head), awash in beautiful chrome trim, glistens behind an equally shiny brass-topped radiator. As with the balance of the car, every surface in the engine bay is spotlessly clean and show-presentable. Viewed from below, the chassis is similarly clean, straight, and undamaged. The dual performance exhaust system, with cutouts for the stainless steel laker-style side pipes, is one obvious focal point, the powder-coated Fenton® headers is another.
The car's original build tag remains mounted.
While the more than 150 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '50 Merc in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.
"Show-stopper" is an often overused-and overstated-descriptor for custom cars. But it is perfectly accurate for this remarkable '50 Mercury, as its next owner will find out whenever and wherever they stop this special build, and admiring crowds begin to gat

    About Garage Kept Motors
Garage Kept Motors, LLC specializes in classic and specialty online auto sales.
For our consignors, we are the only auto brokers that offer a Transparent Sale Disclosure. This means, when a car sells, we provide an exact copy of the Bill of Sale. We do this so our clients know exactly who bought their car, where it went, and most importantly how much we sold it for. No funny business.
For our buyers, our vehicles are listed on the Internet, with over 100 photos, including undercarriage pictures, and walk-around videos of the vehicles running plus a narrative-style write-up of the cars history and features. Our international exposure allows us to sell cars across the globe, and we sell a majority of them out of state and overseas. We deliver honesty and consistency in our photos and descriptions, a “no surprise” approach, so buyers, both near and far, can invest with confidence sight unseen. We are not a gallery. Vehicles can be seen locally by appointment as potential buyers are given our undivided attention.
